Onda

Onda is a non-invasive treatment that uses 2.45 GHz microwave energy to target both fat and collagen.

Unlike RF or HIFU, it delivers energy deeper into the subcutaneous fat layer without heating the surface.

Most lifting and tightening devices, Ultherapy, Thermage, and InMode, apply heat closer to or within the skin’s upper layers, which can increase pigmentation risks.

Even Sofwave, which heats the surface less, still carries some risk for darker or melasma-prone skin.

Microwave energy

Not new, but not old

Microwave energy has been used in aesthetics for about 15 to 20 years, but its adoption has accelerated more recently with advances in technology and safety features.

Early uses were primarily in body contouring and cellulite treatments, leveraging microwaves’ ability to selectively target subcutaneous fat.

In the past 5–10 years, devices like Onda have popularized microwave energy for more precise fat reduction combined with skin tightening. It’s unique advantage is the ability to bypass the dermis, reducing surface risks compared to traditional RF or ultrasound. Microwave energy is an increasingly trusted modality in aesthetics, with ongoing developments expanding its applications.

Fat reduction & body contouring

How it works

Microwave energy uses dielectric heating to make water molecules in fat cells oscillate, generating heat from within.

This selectively disrupts fat cells (adipocytes) at temperatures around 45–50°C, and does not significantly affecting surrounding tissue.

The body then clears out the damaged fat cells through the lymphatic system over several weeks to months, depending on individual metabolism.

Because the process relies on natural elimination rather than extraction, like lipo, results develop gradually and tend to look more natural.

Advantages

Safer for sensitive or reactive skin
Gentler on the barrier, making it a better option for sensitive, rosacea-prone, or reactive skin.

Consistent and controlled energy delivery
Hydration, skin thickness, or melanin ‘have less impact, resulting in more consistent results with lower risk of uneven heating or surface damage.

Broader accessibility across skin tones
Lower heat in the upper skin layers, means a safer option for more Fitzpatrick skin types, including those who might not tolerate laser or RF due to pigmentation risk.

Considerations

Unintended fat loss
Especially on the face, is over-reduction of fat. Treating low-volume areas like the mid-face too aggressively can lead to hollowing.

Nerve irritation (rare)
If energy is delivered near superficial nerves, such as along the jawline, there’s a rare chance of temporary numbness or tingling. This is largely avoidable with proper technique.

Skin laxity without fat
If fat is reduced but skin elasticity is limited, the area may appear slightly loose. This is more likely in older individuals or those with past weight fluctuations.

Temporary swelling, redness, or bruising
Mild swelling, redness, and warmth are common after treatment and typically resolve within a few hours to a few days. Bruising may occur in thinner or more vascular areas.
